The Power of Precision: Understanding Torque Transducers

In the world of engineering and machinery, torque—the twisting or rotational force applied to an object—is a critical parameter. This is where the Torque Transducer comes in.

What is a Torque Transducer?

A torque transducer, often also called a torque sensor or torque meter, is a device that converts the mechanical input of torque (rotational force) into a measurable electrical output signal.

The most common way this is achieved is through strain gauge technology .

  1. A metal shaft, or flexure, deforms slightly when torque is applied.
  2. Strain gauges—tiny electrical resistors—are bonded to this shaft, typically in a Wheatstone bridge configuration.
  3. As the shaft twists, the strain gauges stretch or compress, causing a proportional change in their electrical resistance.
  4. This resistance change generates a measurable voltage signal that is directly proportional to the applied torque. This signal is then interpreted by an external display or control system.
